    COMMODORE’S BIT - Rodger Wheeler

Before I start, please write REGATTA and BARBECUE/JAZZ BAND on your diaries for this weekend 3rd and 4th July. Remember it's a two day regatta as last year but hopefully with better weather. There will be both serious racing and fun and sprint events with of course plenty of food. I hope they can buy enough strawberries for Sunday! By the way dismasting by any method is not allowed this year.
The talk of the day is all about the future use of Sunnyside filter beds and the filterbeds and buildings opposite Platts Eyot all of which are surplus to requirements. The consultants to Thames Water, John Thompson and Partners have set up a consultative framework which includes public meetings and also a series of Focus Groups which look at different aspects of the potential developments.

Representatives of the Focus Group meet as a steering group. A steering committee then collates the views of the focus groups. Aquarius is represented on the River Users Focus Group. If any of you have any views or suggestions these should be passed to me or a member of the Aquarius committee.
I have been reassured by Margaret Grey of Thames Water that the reservoir behind our club is required for the foreseeable future and that there is no intention to displace us, despite some scare stories you may have seen in the local press. John Thompson are issuing a further newsletter on Friday and if you have not yet registered with them, copies will be available at the club.
We have had a really busy time recently with very successful open days and a few prizes from the Bewl and Hampton Regattas.
Unfortunately our next awayday at Datchet appears to have been cancelled due to "lack of water". Someone pull the other leg. But.... there's lots to do about the club so as a consolation prize we have a work party on 10th July from 10a.m. Instead.
All hands to the pump please. - and talking of pumps there may even be some "Old Speckled Hen" left over from the regatta if we are lucky. There is of course plenty to come in our own calendar and yet another week
