The Cundy Trophy is for a long distance race but unfortunately once we go further afield than our immediate reach sailing conditions tend to be poor unless there is an Easterly or Westerly wind. A date isn't specified for the race but it is held as the pm race on a day when the conditions seem suitable. Sunday 15 August seemed ideal with a fairly steady force 2-3 Westerly wind but we were restricted, by the Sunbury Junior Regatta to only going up as far as Rivermead Island. It proved to be a good choice with 10 boats having an excellent sail; as good as you could ever expect well upstream of the Club. Four boats, Richard Cannon in his Signet, young Peter Sutton in his Streaker, Charles Dennis and Graham Thompson in Graduates pulled well away and did two laps in 90 minutes, the rest did one lap in 60 minutes. As usual the Trophy was given for the winner on Personal Handicap and Peter Sutton did extremely well to win the Cundy Trophy with such a long race in a brisk wind. |
