Our new social secretary, Madeline Hatton, decided a theatre visit would be a change for the club. The result was that on a Friday evening in March I had the pleasure of going with twenty-five other members of the club to see Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Whistle Down the Wind at the Aldwych Theatre. |

Many years ago I had seen the film version starring Hayley Mills, but this bore no resemblance. The production was set in America in the fifties, complete with a touch of line dancing and flashy motor bike. |

‘Jesus’ (an escaped prisoner) was discovered in a barn by the farmer’s daughter, who with the other local children proceeded to look after him. Meanwhile, the adults were in frenzy searching for the escapee - this was all portrayed by wonderful singing and splendid acting. |

The scenery for such a small theatre was amazing with the stage floor splitting horizontally, and moving vertically, creating two scenes at different levels at once. There was also the surprise element which made everybody in the theatre jump-but I am not revealing that! |

All in all it was a jolly good evening out; it was a lovely alternative to an evening at the Clubhouse and many thanks to Madeline for organising it. |

I for one am looking forward to the next Aquarius excursion – a walk to look at azaleas and rhododendrons. |
