Cundy Trophy

Cundy Trophy 14 September

The Cundy Trophy is for a long distance race and for a good long distance sail we need to go upstream in an Easterly wind. A date isn’t scheduled in the program as it is very unlike to provide a good sail but it is sailed concurrent with the first afternoon race when the conditions are suitable.

On September 14 although there was a 2knt current the 5 to 7 knt steady East wind seemed ideal and the OOD, Richard Cannon, decided to hold the Cundy race.

The first mark was down stream and after it was rounded the patrol boat went upstream just ahead of the fleet of 6 boats for 35 minute. Beyond the lock progress was slower due to the faster current. The second mark was laid below the weir opposite Wilsons’ Ferry; probably the furthest we have race upstream.

The last boat rounded the second mark at 40 minutes, the first boat finished after 1:02 hrs and the last one after 1:08 hrs. It was a very enjoyable sail and the Cundy Race couldn’t have been held in better conditions.

Sailing a Club Laser Hanna Lunniss did extremely well to the keep up with the experience helm and won the Cundy Trophy on Personal Handicap by a big margin.
