COMMODORE'S BIT by Rodger Wheeler
This season has been characterised by the "Invasion of the Graduates" masterminded by Graham Thompson. One day (when the Signets were away) we had six graduates on the water and a solitary laser.
The Club boats have seen regular use and it was nice to see our newer members on the water. The club fleet will be further augmented if our Millenium Grant Application for a Laser Pico is successful. The Pico with it's smaller sail area will enable younger members to sail in a two man boat. It will be particularly useful as a training boat.
There was too much water for the Bewl Bank Holiday Weekend (2 inches from above!). Sailing was less of a battle on the Monday but the day finished with a spectacular hailstorm. That was when my head felt that it could do with a rather more profuse follicular covering.
The Hampton Regatta had everything with 30 degrees, sun and WIND. Despite various attacks on the Hampton pontoon it survived. Aquarius sailors now have a reputation for being totally unable to approach a jetty from windward. Needless to say, Richard was intent on retrieving some Hampton glassware, and succeeded by coming first in the handicap race with Mark Milstead and John Tomkins as crew.
The social side has been very well supported. This kicked off with the start of season Party complete with an excellent presentation by John Heath recounting his replica boat building exploits with a focus on the building of the "Grand Turk", based on an 18th Century 150 foot frigate in Turkey. This vessel is now touring Britain for the National Trust.
In May the club visited Coverwood Lakes, with Lunch at a pub, a beautiful Azalea garden and afternoon tea.
This month "Murder - She Said" courtesy of Bob Sumner and Janet proved to be a hilarious event with a platter of food to complement the evening.
