AQSC Open Weekend - 8/9 May

Although the club is now open to visitors every Sunday we continue to hold our annual ‘Open Weekend’ to help raise the clubs visibility in the local area and, hopefully, increase the membership. Publicity flyers were made available to the members well in advance and a couple of weeks before a local community event announcement request was put into Radio Jackie for broadcasting (the station manager is, luckily, also a keen sailor). Publicity information was also posted on the local council website and in local shops and libraries.

Saturday morning was less than encouraging. It was bitterly cold and raining and all my doubts about holding the open weekend too early in the year started to crowd in. By 10:30am a number of helpers had turned up and several of our Bosuns were being rigged ready for use, but by lunch time not one visitor had shown up. Things picked up a little in the afternoon and we had one visitor; the smallest number we have ever had.

I wasn’t around on Sunday but I’m told the number of visitors was good (12 groups totalling 30 people) with a number of potential new members identified. We will have to wait and see how many convert into actual membership applications. Thanks to everyone, afloat and ashore who helped out over the weekend, it was really appreciated.
