Surprise Event – Sunday 15 January 2012
This was originally to have been a pantomime but youth support was thin on the ground this year so it was decided to hold a late lunch followed by an entertainment. Subsequently the surprise event became Sailing and Lunch, with Cole Porter.

Sailing And Lunch, With Cole Porter
Sun 15th January was as good as any summer day for sailing, with a clear blue sky, steady easterly wind and slight chill in the air. When I arrived at 11 Frank G was already rigging his beautiful new Laser so I headed down the bank for my Comet, which I must confess to having cleaned in order to compete with the Laser on looks!
And there we were spinning up and down our stretch of water with Josh, Frank's grandson riding on the front of the Laser. The patrol boat didn't join in the fun after Richard realised, when collecting Roger and Linda, that reversing was not an option! fortunately Brian was able to put it right when he arrived at about 12.
Everyone started to arrive for lunch and warmth and good smells emanated from the club house. We were served warming soup followed by quiche and chips before the Cole Porter entertainment started. Brian and I managed another hour on the water before coming ashore as the sunset, just in time for dessert.
There are few summer days offer the good wind conditions, made even more pleasurable by the relative emptiness of the river with only scullers for competition. If it carries on like this, some of us will be way ahead of the field by the time the racing season starts. Not that 'we' need the practice having won all the trophies last season!
